Large breed dogs most popular are Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers; these were rated 1st, 2nd and 4th most popular respectively by the AKC in 2010. They vary in height from 22inches (56cm) to about 29inches (76cm).They can be a challenge to train and need a stern voice and learn discipline and control while young. Large breed dogs make great family pets and are fun to be around.
Labrador Retriever – These large breed dogs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. A characteristic of this large breed dog is its webbed paws used for swimming, required for retrieving fishing nets, one of its original purposes. They are a well balanced and friendly breed also very gentle. This large breed dog is great for families being even tempered and fun loving. German Shepherd - This large breed dog originated in Germany, being a relatively new breed of dog, with its origin dating to 1899. As part of the Herding group, the German Shepherd is a working dog developed originally for herding and guarding sheep. Because of its strength, intelligence and abilities in obedience training this large breed dog is often employed in police and military roles around the world. Due to its loyal and protective nature, the German Shepherd is one of the most registered of large breed dogs

Golden Retreiver –This large breed dog was originally developed as gundogs to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and birds during hunting and shooting parties. As such, they were bred to have a soft mouth to retrieve game undamaged and have an instinctive love of water. The golden retriever has a dense inner coat that provides it with adequate warmth. The outer coat is sleek and water repellent, and lies flat against the body. The official color of this large breed dog is the varying shades of gold that are most often seen. This large breed dogs intelligence and versatility suit the breed for a variety of roles including guide dogs, hearing dogs hunting dogs, illegal drug detectors, and search and rescue participants. Because of their loyal and gentle temperament, golden retrievers are also popular family pets. Golden Retrievers possess a friendly, eager-to-please demeanor for large breed dogs
