The types of small dogs that are most popular as registered by the AKC in 2009 are Yorkshire Terrier, Beagle, and Dachshund, being the 3rd, 5th and 8th most popular dogs overall respectively. These types of small dogs generally weigh less than 22lbs and are usually shorter than 16 inches. A few breeds are borderline between small and medium. Small dogs make great companions and can live in small areas like apartments, however they still need exercise.

 
Yorkshire Terrier –These types of small dogs have an active temperament, they love to play and enjoy time around humans. They are quite intelligent and devoted companions and sometimes they can be a little bit stubborn. These types of small dogs get along very well with children, but don’t have the patience for rough play. They are a very confident dog. They also need to be groomed regularly, with daily combing and brushing.

 
Beagle – These types of small dogs are energetic, low maintenance and good company for children and adults. This is a lively and inquisitive dog and can be single-minded if it finds a scent. A structured training program is recommended for this type of small dog. Beagles have few health problems but can be prone to overeating and its eating must be monitored. The short coat needs only an occasional brush, which makes these types of small dogs perfect pets.

 
Dachshund – These types of small dogs are cute and cuddly but also they are very energetic, clever and have a curious nature. Dachshunds are very loyal to their owners and can make a good guard dog. This particular type of small dog, due to its hunting lineage does need exercise so that it doesn’t get bored and start chewing things. Their diet needs to be monitored due to their long spine and short rib cage, they shouldn’t carry extra weight which can cause problems to these types of small dogs.
